Spending crores on advertisements and on construction, the Gujarat government proudly announced that the state will now be having community halls in various localities throughout Gujarat which will facilitate social gatherings including marriage, social and religious functions at a nominal cost for the citizens.

Instead, 8 MLAs and 65 corporators have booked all the community halls in Ahmedabad till 2019. Now the High Court had to intervene.

A community halls is a public space which can be utilized by the common people on booking for minimal booking cost for social functions including marriage birthdays or religious function for public gathering.

A public Interest Litigation filed recently with the Ahmedabad High Court, reveals that the politicians of the city have booked all the Community halls in the city for vested interests. During a hearing in case in the court if was informed that till 2019, no community hall is available to the general public as it is booked by the powerful politicians.

Now, the High Court has sought an explanation for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, which is entrusted with the job of booking and maintenance of the Community halls, as to how these halls are out of reach of the common people.

According to sources, this is a common practice and is not new. After getting it booked on their names, the politicians then transfer it to the people who are close to them when there is a need for a social gathering such as marriage.

The High Court has now directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to provide the names of the sitting MLAs and corporators who have booked in advance, to the court during the next hearing.
